Strategies for using artificial intelligence in environmental journalism and for expanded access to information in Indonesia
Development of AI models in environmental journalism strongly depends on the quality and availability of input data. Currently, a major part of this data comes from English-language online sources. Also the integration of non-digital knowledge sources for AI training from regional and cultural contexts worldwide is an ongoing challenge.
AI development is impacted by the digital divide between technologically advanced countries and most of our partner countries in the global south. This inequality is caused by increasing dominance of private companies in AI research and application as well as by a dominance of data availability from English language sources with US or Western origin.
For successful digital change, human-centered AI systems are needed that address and reflect social and cultural realities of their users. This is particularly important for media development cooperation to be able to provide validated information and to create meaningful offers.
Media actors having the know-how to understand, question and promote technological developments for their own purposes will ensure both the quality of their work and will support future economical sustainability of their region..
