On 9 July 2015, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) have signed an agreement for a joint research institute in Ethiopia. The “Emerging City Lab Addis Ababa” will, as a joint research institute, continue the idea of experimental building that has been implemented over the past six years as part of a research and training cooperation in the Ethiopian capital.
Prof. Dirk Donath, who has over the last years done the practical preparatory work, will in the next three years coordinate the establishment of the “Emerging City Lab Addis Ababa”. He says: “Weimar and Addis Ababa have been cooperating for many years in the fields of architecture, structural design and urban planning. The results of the experimental work were mainly related to the optimization of building types and constructions. In future, the research laboratory will integrate urban, social, constructional, technical and infrastructural aspects. The core is made up of joint research with an integrated training in the master and doctoral studies. Experimental in this context means, that we build what we research”.
